With that thought in mind, I don't care about the politics part. I'm looking for story telling. What i can't ignore is the obvious effort to ignore story telling and create a laser point hit piece against an actual television network. Forget creating a cogent story.
If the approach was more along the lines of 'Network' or 'Broadcast News. or even 'His Girl Friday' the story would've held more credibility. Instead, this comes off as an hour and 43 minute version of the Media's reality. In other words - a fantasy. A fantasy that the writers pour in real people and work to make them look bad. What ends up happening is all look bad and there's no conclusion to the film.
Instead of creating solid characters set in the story, the writers and directors present what they want to present to make their case - A flock of blonde "bimbos' to put on screen to sell their "story. In other words, they were sexually harassing those they hired to take the parts in the film. The "Bombshells" are the actresses more than those they portrayed. The two main actresses are far more attractive than the people they play. The third more attractive than just all all women in major television news. Sheesh!
The film makers should say a line in the film, I feel filthy." for presenting the same efforts as they wrote of Fox news in the film.
This could have been so much better if the writers had concocted a tale with fictional woman with greater depth of each character and presented more viable reasons for the bad guy they wanted us to believe. Instead - I guess for libel reasons - the production tippy toes around allegations in hope suggestions begat a bad guy. It just doesn't work.
This is all a pity, because the acting is tremendous. Theron is great. Lithgow gives one of his best performances. The likenesses extraordinary. A bit too much so. The likenesses were so good and knowing one is watching a fictional film, has to have a viewer see this as an effort to portray the characters from a more editorial view point than good story telling.
A better film would've included the Bill O'Reilly, Brian Williams, Matt Lauer, etc. cases. Strip out real names and situations. Make it an investigative reporter uncovering cases all over fictional news outlets and tries to get the story out, but the social media direction of news won't let it appear. THAT would've been a better story! Especially the resolution!
Bottom line: I don't recommend this film. 4 out of ten stars.
Successes: Acting and makeup.
Failures: Story and structure.

This was: a very good (but imperfect) book. It does some cool things with form- one chapter for every minute from when the plane hit the first tower to when it collapsed. It has a compelling critique of capitalism and US Imperialism that suddenly goes soft at the end - but perhaps thats partly excused because of when it was published (relatively soon after the attacks) The ending is bad and kind of hokey. Still, I highly recommend it. I'm still not quite sure what I think about this book. The chapters run minute by minute, and alternate between the thoughts of the gentleman who is trapped in the north tower with his young boys, and the thoughts of the Author. I found this a bit distracting. That being said, this book managed to both break my heart, and make me chuckle. Not an easy feat considering the subject matter! I'm glad I read this, it's very different. The idea I liked and found in this book: the break in the life of generation. Generation of 50-a, 60-s, 80-s, 90-s. All of them have their own story. It form their personality, it makes them to be different. What is the break of 2000 generation? Does the collapse of American world contributed to the change of our picture of the world. I amnt sure. less offended by the subject matter (recreating last hour of 9/11 atop WTC) or even the jokey tone - than the piss-poor quality of the prose itself this is a really shitty book, irrespective of its 'transgressive' nature more evidence that the degeneration of the Arts is pandemic (Windows won the Prix Interallie) This book is an unique addition to the dozens of things written on 9/11. It is different- I like it. It is written from two very different people who live countries apart and I think this is what makes it stand apart from other things I've read. After the attack, I was forced to have to go back into the city just blocks away from ground zero. The smell was unreal. The air was thick with pain and sorrow. human body is amazing the and will to press on was also in the air. You also feel like one of the lucky ones to have survived. This was my first political rally, but I very much doubt it will be my last. Finally, there is someone who thinks as we do! Finally, there is someone honest, decent, reliable and down to earth, who says it like it is. And the vast majority of Liverpool, it seems, is right behind him! This guy is alive today because he decided to change his shirt. You don't know which decisions end up being the big ones. They all matter. So, when someone asks me what I'd do differently if I could have something back to do over, I say I wouldn't change a damned thing.

À son bord, la femme dIngimundur est tuée sur le coup. Lhomme, inconsolable, essaye de retrouver une raison de vivre. Mais un jour, en rangeant les affaires de sa femme, il comprend que celle-ci avait un amant… À l'image des paysages islandais, rocailleux et avares de végétation. Un jour si blanc " est un film brut, minéral. Séparé tragiquement de la femme qu'il aimait, Ingimundur sait que seul le temps pourra apaiser sa peine. Alors, appliqué mécaniquement à sa tache, il retape saison après saison un ancien entrepôt, afin d'offrir une belle maison à sa fille. Portrait d'une âme accidentellement solitaire, le film consacre son héros à sa famille. La fille l'a bien compris et se décharge régulièrement sur lui pour qu'il garde sa petite-fille. La relation entre l'homme et l'enfant est exclusive et aimante, même si l'homme, toujours très entier, a des réactions à l'emporte-pièce comme dans cette très belle scène où la fillette lui demande une histoire qui fait peur. Et elle ne sera pas déçue. Au delà de l'analyse psychologique d'un homme meurtri. Un jour si blanc " se nourrit d'un désir de vengeance. Petit à petit, la caméra verrouille sa focale sur son héros pour pouvoir capter la rage qui monte. Tel un volcan, Ingimundur garde sa douleur en lui pour exploser au moment opportun. L'homme est flic et sait comment s'y prendre. Or la douleur a ses raisons que la raison ignore et le film glisse alors dans un registre plus viscéral. Sur une route sinueuse de bord de mer, écrasée par la brume dans un paysage figé par le froid de l'hiver, une voiture file vite, trop vite. Les virages senchaînent, jusqu'à celui qui sera fatal. Sans réelle transition, on découvre une grande maison en construction posée au milieu de la lande sauvage. Dans une longue séquence immobile, les saisons défilent, la pluie s'abat, la neige recouvre tout, le soleil illumine la végétation qui s'éveille alors que la maison prend forme. Et on comprend que cette maison est celle que Ingimundur, un retraité de la police, bâtit jour après jour et sans relâche pour sa fille, son gendre et sa petite fille. Ingimundur… sa vie a basculé en un instant, en un coup de volant, quand sa femme chérie est allée mystérieusement tout droit au bout de la route, plongeant irrémédiablement au pied de la falaise. Depuis Ingimundur, pour réussir à contenir son immense douleur, tenter de faire un deuil impossible, scie, cloue, emboîte inlassablement, et seule sa petite fille espiègle (géniale jeune actrice, qui est la propre fille du réalisateur) lui apporte des moments de bonheur et de sérénité que ne lui procurent pas forcément les séances de psychothérapie un peu désuètes délivrées via skype par un thérapeute de la ville. Nouveau coup dur quand il comprend, au détour de quelques indices et d'une vidéo retrouvée, que, dans la période précédant sa mort, sa femme avait une liaison. La colère de découvrir cette relation adultère, ajoutée au deuil qu'il n'arrive pas à surmonter, va faire naître en lui une obsession paranoïaque: et si l'amant était lié à la mort de son épouse? Sur une trame somme toute classique de polar (mort / deuil / traque /vengeance) Hlynur Palmason déroule un récit intrigant en y glissant tout ce qu'on aime de l'imaginaire scandinave: une histoire belle et prenante comme une tragédie grecque, bousculée par des ruptures de ton qui peuvent être étonnamment tendres – le grand père s'amusant à faire peur à sa petite fille avec des récits effrayants qui la ravissent – ou furieusement cocasses – une bagarre pathétique entre Ingimundur et ses anciens collègues du commissariat local qui vire au grand burlesque. Et puis il y a la mise en scène impressionnante, qui se nourrit des paysages telluriques, lunaires, irréels de ce coin perdu d'Islande: ainsi cette séquences aussi énigmatique que magnétique quand la caméra suit en plan séquence un rocher qui dévale interminablement la montagne jusqu'à l'océan… Grâce à son talent visionnaire et à sa maîtrise du rythme, du cadre, de la lumière, grâce aussi à l'interprétation exceptionnelle d'Ingvar E. Sigurdsson, figure incontournable du cinéma islandais (il était entre autres l'acteur principal du polar Jar city, disponible en Vidéo en Poche, et du savoureux Des Chevaux et des hommes) qui décline magnifiquement toutes les étapes du deuil d'Ingimundur, jusqu'à un climax d'émotion lors de la dernière séquence, Hlynur Palmason rentre avec Un jour si blanc dans la cour des grands.

The narrative slowly unravels like a novel as themes are explored through nuance and metaphor. The delicate dealing with love lost recalls Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine and Céline Sciamma's Portrait de La Jeune Fille en Feu, regarding the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The cinematography, shot in a noticeably textured 35mm, is peculiar in the way it involves the setting and keeps us a certain physical distance from the characters. I think Michael Haneke would be proud of this film.
The central character Ingimunder's relationship with his granddaughter Salka serves the film in predictable but endearing ways. Strong child acting is often taken for granted, but Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir's performance is far from typical. It is also a testament to both fine direction (Hlynur Palmason) and strong casting because the two leads are almost irreplaceable and truly contribute to make the film something special.
A White, White Day is enriched by its simplicity and singularity as it takes on heavy themes. The characters are real, the story is thoughtfully restrained, and the ending is remarkable. One of the more memorable films of the year.

Une comtesse lui a commandé un portrait de sa fille Héloïse, fiancée à un noble milanais. On informe Marianne qu'Héloïse refuse de poser pour un portrait car elle ne souhaite pas se marier. Marianne est donc faussement engagée comme dame de compagnie d'Héloïse, qui l'accompagne quotidiennement lors de ses sorties afin d'analyser de mémoriser ses traits pour les recopier sur une toile. Marianne finit le portrait mais refuse de trahir la confiance d'Héloïse et lui dévoile donc le tableau ainsi que la vraie raison de sa venue. Héloïse critique fortement le tableau, que Marianne détruit ensuite. La mère d'Héloïse s'apprête à renvoyer Marianne quand Héloïse décide de poser pour un deuxième portrait. Un soir, elles lisent, avec Sophie, une servante, l'histoire d' Orphée et d' Eurydice avant de débattre sur la vraie raison qui aurait poussé Orphée à se retourner. Les deux femmes aident Sophie à se faire avorter et vont à un rassemblement de femmes qui chantent et dansent, où la robe d'Héloïse commence à prendre feu. Pendant ce temps, Marianne est hantée par une vision d'Héloïse en robe de mariée. Le lendemain, Marianne et Héloïse vont dans une grotte et partagent leur premier baiser ainsi que leur première nuit ensemble le soir même. Les jours suivants, leur romance ne cesse d'accroître. Cependant, elle est bafouée lors du retour inévitable de la mère d'Héloïse. Marianne dessine des croquis d'Héloïse et d'elle-même qu'elles s'échangent pour se souvenir de l'autre et échangent un bref adieu. Less is more sometimes and this film gives you just enough of what is needed to fulful your appitite for a wonderful love story. subtle, believable, and very sensual. Using art and artist as a medium to develop the relationship between the leads was executed perfectly with a brilliant script that gave life and love to them. Direction, production, and everything in between also made this movie a hit. It may not be for everyone but once you start watching you will want to see its entirety. This film is even with and may be better than 'GirI with a Pearl Ear Ring' which I also rated high. So I gave this film a very well deserved 9, for excellent.
