In the movie "Fateless, Gyuri, a young man sent to Buchenwald, moves from a childlike innocence to world-weariness in the span of one year. When he comes home, he feels more alone than he did at the camp and even expresses a sort of homesickness for the camaraderie he felt. As a disfigured Holocaust survivor in Christian Petzold's "Phoenix, Nina Hoss' shattered look, repressed emotions, and shaky voice feel so natural that her gradual awakening to life epitomizes a Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Hungary's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2019 Academy Awards, Barnabás Tóth's ( Camembert Rose" Those Who Remained (Akik maradtak) asks us to rethink our idea of what liberation meant to those just released from the camps. Based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Zsuzsa F. Varkonyi and set in Budapest between 1948 and 1953, the suffering of the Holocaust years are deeply etched on the face of Doctor Aládar (Aldo) Körner (Károly Hajduk, One Day. a slender, gaunt man of about forty who is going through the motions of his Ob-Gyn practice at a Budapest hospital, but the look in his eyes cannot hide the trauma of his wife's death and that of his two young boys.
Coming from the Israelite Community Orphanage, Klára (Abigél Szõke, X - The eXploited. a mature-looking 16-year-old girl, sees Dr. Körner, for a gynecological exam to find out why her puberty has come so late. At first, angry, fearful, and wound into a tight knot, when she reaches out and suddenly embraces the doctor, it is clear that she is seeking more than an exam but a respite from her desperate loneliness. Outspoken in her disdain for her classmates at school and her great-aunt Olgi (Mari Nagy, Budapest Noir" with whom she lives, Klára only begins to reveal her repressed humanity when Aldo responds to her like a fellow human being in pain, not a wounded animal.
Bringing the film to life with her tremendously affecting performance, Szõke refuses to return to Olgi even though she loves her and wants her to be happy. Instead, she moves in with Aldo who acts as a foster father, sharing custody with her aunt. He makes the rules, however, and is strict about physical contact, especially when she crawls into bed with him at night. Gradually, both open up though to each other. They talk about God, her parents, the sister she feels guilty about not being able to save from death, and, in a tender scene, he shares with her his photo album from before the war.
Though Aldo strictly adheres to the rules of propriety, their developing relationship raises some eyebrows, and the interest of Soviet operatives. Amidst talk of a Soviet crackdown on personal freedoms, Aldo and Klára do their best to be discreet, but it does not prevent others from gossiping. In one instance, after being seen in a park laying her head on Aldo's lap, Klára is defiant when interrogated by a Communist official. Similarly, Pista (Andor Lukáts, The Whiskey Bandit. Aldo's colleague at work, says that people have disappeared during the night and tells him that he has joined the Communist Party and has been asked to inform on him.
Those Who Remained is an intimate look at two damaged souls who have been bruised and shaken by life but are now ready to begin the reconstruction of their life, a process which will, in Percy Bysshe Shelley's phrase "lift the veil from the hidden beauty of the world." Knowing that any expression of the love they feel for each other will push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable, both realize that their protestations of innocence will not be enough to keep them safe, and that they must now reach out to others, bringing solace and joy in a world in dire need of both.

Watched this film today. In fact, this movie is one of the best movies I had seen in recent years. I would go as far as to say that this film could be one of the Oscar contenders. After being assigned as psychiatric hospital roommates, one of the women recovered from her delusion as a result of conversations with the roommate and was discharged. This was a great film. Haven't been this engrossed in a movie like this in a long time. 👏🏼 Richard Gere is even better than before - and he was always pretty damn good. "Three Christs" was a last minute choice of mine at the TIFF. As a big Dinklage's fan, and considering that it was a world premiere, it was easy enough to go check it out. I'm glad I did. This movie is one about the brain and its struggles, but it does so with a big heart. It's funny and touching with a good balance, and the acting is top notch (I'm actually a bigger Dinklage's fan after the movie. The underlying themes about psychiatry as science and its potential negative effect on personality, the nature of identity, the complex interaction of desire and fear are inhabiting the film and are as relevant today as they were at the time. In summary, a great entertaining movie with a deeper layer. and a stellar Dinklage.

In A Nutshell In the late 1950s, psychologist Milton Rokeach and a team of researchers began an experiment in which they gathered three psychiatric patients and had them live together in Michigan’s Ypsilanti State Hospital to see how their beliefs might change or adapt. The bombshell? They were all suffering under the delusion that they were Christ. Rokeach’s methods were questionable, and his results both inconclusive and of little worth, but the experiment has become one of the weirder and more infamous of psychological case studies. The Whole Bushel Social psychologist Milton Rokeach was inspired to conduct the experiment after reading an account in a 1955 issue of Harper’s Magazine that told the story of two women who thought that they were Mary, Mother of God who had come face to face by chance within a mental institution in Maryland. He chose three patients, all suffering from the delusion that they were Jesus, and set them up to live together in the Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan in 1959. The three patients each had their own unique ideas. Joseph Cassel went either by his given name or “God. ” Clyde Benson stated upon introducing himself that, “Well, I have other names, but that’s my vital side and I made God five and Jesus six. ” Leon Gabor said, “Sir, it so happens that my birth certificate says that I am Dr. Domino Dominorum et Rex Rexarum, Simplis Christianus Pueris Mentalis Doktor [Latin for “Lord of Lords, and King of Kings, Simple Christian Boy Psychiatrist”]. It also states on my birth certificate that I am the reincarnation of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. ” When joined together, the three patients almost immediately fell to arguing among themselves over who was the “true” Jesus among them, and did so throughout their first sessions, with Leon likening them to “mental torture. ” Just what was Rokeach trying to prove? Dr. Rokeach wondered how individuals with conflicting identity delusions would react when deliberately paired up. He thought that it might be possible to alter or even eliminate schizophrenic delusions if patients were forced to confront the existential contradiction of others who possessed the same delusions of identity. A sort of mental “shock treatment, ” if you will. The beginning of the experiment went about as well as one would expect. The three men argued and were upset in each other’s nearly constant company. They ate, slept, and worked in a laundry room together. In one of their arguments, in response to Leon’s contention that Adam was a “colored man, ” Clyde became visibly angry, which prompted Leon to utter perhaps the most profound statement of the whole experiment, at least when it comes to the question of how conflicting beliefs and ideologies accommodate or come in conflict with each other in the outside world: “I believe in truthful bulls—t but I don’t care for your bulls—t. ” (Clyde responded by punching him in the cheek. ) Almost from the beginning of the experiment, the doctor was manipulating the men’s lives, especially Leon. Once it became clear that direct confrontation had little effect, he would show them fake newspaper clippings designed to elicit a response, send fake letters from Dr. Yodar (the hospital’s superintendent) to Joseph (in an attempt to see what effect a higher authority figure might have on Joseph’s beliefs), and even impersonated Leon’s delusional wife outside of the hospital, in letters the doctor signed “Madame Yeti Woman” and later, “Madame Dr R. I. Dung. ” This name was used after Leon insisted on a name change to “Dr Righteous Idealed Dung Sir Simplis Christianus Puer Mentalis Doctor” (in an apparent effort to distance himself from confrontations within the group). This was perhaps, the worst of the Doctor’s ethical lapses, in that it caused Leon great distress. He suspected the letters from the start, but always went to the meeting places the letters arranged; his “wife” never showed. Instead of having breakthroughs, the men began to accommodate each other, even going so far as to show a clear preference for each other’s company. Each patient came to explain away the others in eccentric ways. Clyde decided that the other two were actually dead, and that it was “the machines inside of them” that kept them alive, while the other two settled on variations of believing that the others were “duped” or “crazy. ” Leon especially came close to revelation when he noted that the others were in a mental institution, so they must be crazy. As Leon had constructed elaborate explanations as to why he was living in a mental institution, obviously, it did not apply to him. None of the patients were ever cured, or ever had positive results, and no useful material was ever developed from the experiments, especially when advances in neuroscience showed that many of the experiment’s assumptions on the nature of schizophrenia were dead wrong. The patients never did seem interested in resolving the question of “who was the real Jesus among them? ” and showed clear signs that they only wanted to live in peace together. When Dr. Rokeach finally pulled the plug on the experiment in 1961, the three men were carefully avoiding mention of any subject that could lead to religion or the question of their identities. Dr. Rokeach wrote a book on the subject entitled The Three Christs of Ypsilanti, where he concluded (rather weakly) with the Freudian idea that the delusions suffered by the three men were the result of confusion over sexual identity and noting that we all, “seek ways to live with one another in peace. ” There may have been a fourth person within the study who was under the delusion that he was God; the good Dr. Rokeach himself. Milton Rokeach, a professor of social psychology, conducted a study at the Ypsilanti State Hospital from 1959 to 1961 of three men, who were all diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and each believed that he was Jesus Christ. The purpose of the study, which was based on the limited knowledge and lack of effective treatment options for patients with severe mental illness at the time, was to determine if a person with a deluded personal belief could change that claim, and any behaviors associated with it, if he encountered another person who shared that same, incongruent belief. Rokeach and his partners, with the blessing of the Medical Superintendent of the hospital (as there were no Institutional Review Boards at that time), transferred the three men to a single ward and oversaw interviews and meetings in which the men were confronted with each others' claims. As expected, each man was initially upset and distraught by the presence of two other men who made the same claim as he, and each coped by adopting a view that permitted him to retain his own deeply held belief that he was the true Christ, where the others were either impostors or lesser gods. Interestingly, the men, who were not isolated from others on the hospital ward, preferred the company of the other Christs despite their frequent disagreements, and seemed to get along with each other better than the others. After realizing that the men altered but did not fundamentally change their belief systems, Rokeach and his team decided to intervene, in a quite intrusive and ethically questionable manner, in the personal lives of each of the men, in order to force them to change their delusional beliefs without specifically addressing each one's view of himself as Christ. The experiments conducted on two of the men were described in detail in second half of the book. One man, who was never married but believed that he was, received letters from his "wife" on the outside, who urged him to give up his adopted name (Dr. Righteous Idealised Dung Sir) Another Christ, who frequently spoke of the Medical Superintendent of the hospital as "Dad", received fake letters from this doctor, who claimed that he loved him like a son, and encouraged him to take a new medication (potent-valuemiocene, which was a placebo) that would cure him of his untrue beliefs. These experiments were ultimately unsuccessful, and were deeply troubling to both men. After two years, with nothing significant to show for the study, the team disbanded, and Dr. Rokeach left to pursue further study at Stanford and write this book. Rokeach discusses the different types of personal belief systems prior to each set of experiments, from infancy through adulthood, and in mental health and illness, which provides context to the design of the study and the book, which consists of observations by the team, conversations by the men with the staff and each other, and the letters that were written to the men, and their replies. The book concludes with an afterword, twenty years after [The Three Christs of Ypsilanti] was initially published in 1964. Rokeach updates us on the (lack of) progress made by each of the men, and reflects on the flawed methodology of the study, realizing that there was a fourth Christ in this experiment-himself: And I would now also see the book as ending somewhat differently: while I had failed to cure the three Christs of their delusions, they had succeeded in curing me of mine-of my God-like delusion that I could change them by omnipotently and omnisciently arranging and rearranging their daily lives within the framework of a "total institution. I watched it was aswome. I really love and appreciate this reaction. The ability to put a vulnerable and honest reaction like this out in to the world is commendable. Especially knowing how mean and cynical people can be. And seeing your amiable and classy responses to even the most negative and cruel comments has given me a lot of respect for you. Seeing the love that you and your family has for this franchise has reminded me of why I used up be so proud to be a Star Wars fan. But the twisted and disgusting turn that part of the fandom has taken has tarnished some of my enthusiasm. I love all of the new movies, but according to many other fans I am wrong for that and should feel bad for liking them. Especially with the vitriol and cruelty that many of these people approach anybody that disagrees with them. It's made any discussion impossible. It's perfectly fine to not like or hate one or all of the new movies, but it's not okay to make others feel bad for loving them. All of that has somewhat killed my enthusiasm for this movie, because I know that it is inevitably going to lead to even more hate and toxicity. But seeing the pure love and passion that you and your family has, has reminded me of the magic and joy that Star Wars is capable of. Lol this is going to be so bad. Look, every Star Wars movie has problems. This one isn't an exception. The first act drags, some of the twists and retcons seem forced (get it. Some of the dialogue is expository nonsense.
And yet. br> It's hard to not be swept up in the fantasy. Star Wars (for how seriously some people take it) has always been about one thing: fun. It's a ridiculous space wizard saga with creatures, robots, superpowers, space battles and sword fights.
This movie is FUN. It brings back the best of the OT and blends it with the best of the sequels. It leans into the crazier corners of this sci fi universe and delivers payoff after glorious payoff. The characters have great interplay and the emotional beats hit hard, even when they're a tad nonsensical.
Star Wars has always aped the goofy Saturday morning serials of old and Rise of Skywalker acts as a love letter to them and the saga They inspired. It may not be the best Star Wars film, but it's certainly the MOST Star Wars-y flick ever made.
Just lean in and enjoy the ride.

I watched this last night with my family, and it was an entertaining movie for all ages. It's hard to find a movie that the whole family can watch, without cussing and violence or awkward sexual moments, without resorting to an animated movie.
Felicity Jones and Redmayne are very fun to watch on screen. I believe this would be their second movie as a duo, beginning with Theory of Everything. Redmayne is one of the best actors of our time. I will watch any movie he is in.
As someone who cares deeply about and studies history, I empathize with the passionate reviews that condemn revisionist history. However, these people, while they aren't wrong, should look at what the director wrote about this movie and why he created it. If they had, I think they would be less offended by the revised history aspect.
Director Tom Harper had read the book, Falling Upwards by Richard Holmes. This book recounts numerous balloon voyages. The James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell voyage was incredibly scientific in nature. And according to the book, they two hardly spoke. So while the voyage is a good backdrop for a movie, two characters hardly speaking is not great cinema. So inevitably something would be revised in order to sell the movie.
Taking the 1862 voyage as a starting point, he wove other stories into the movie. The director says that the events in the movie are meant to be a collection of some of the more heroing moments in balloon aviation, and that all of them truly happened on different voyages. Having seen the movie, I still have my doubts about every small detail being possible to have happened. But that's beside the point. And also, maybe I need to read Falling Upward before I judge.
I think for any Hollywood movie, steeped in history, we give up some historical integrity at some point. As someone who is interested in history, but not an expert by any means, I can point holes in just about every movie, said to be based on true events. I think it comes down to a director's vision having the ultimate say on what they do with a story or with a set of characters. If the movies were left up to Hollywood, we wouldn't be entertained. If this had been a true historical account, I never would have heard of or learned about this magnificent point in history.
I gave the movie a 5/10 for more typical cinematic reasons, but I was not offended in the least by the choices the director took with his story. I would like to see more movies like this, any day.
