Average rating 3. 62 3, 236 ratings 137 reviews, Start your review of Windows on the World We know that none of the 1, 344 people trapped on the nineteen floors above survived. Obviously, this piece of information removes any element of suspense from this book. So much the better: this isnt a thriller; it is simply an attempt—doomed, perhaps—to describe the indescribable. One of my reading resolutions for 2018 is to complete all of the past winners of the two premier prizes for literature in English translation - the Best Translated Book Award from the US and the Independent Foreign... I couldn't decide on what star rating to give this. This is, at once, the most horribly self-indulgent book I've ever read, and one of the most insightful looks into today that I've ever seen. The author is an asshole, who blends himself with the fictional character constantly. But I've been reading a ton of French philosophy and perspectives on America recently. He's drawing a lot of it from that. This book is an attempt at the hyperreal novel. Where fiction becomes more real than reality. What... Windows on the World is quite a depressing piece of French literature at times because of its subject matter, but it captures New York around the boom pre-9/11 perfectly, and its characters feel just like real people, making the book all the more powerful and memorable. This book introduced me to several issues I had never thought of regarding the WTC attack on 9/11. First off, I did not know that the people who were stuck in the floors above the level where the plane entered were stuck there for 2 hours before the tours collapsed. I also did not know there were no attempts to rescue them (thru helicopter, for example. So, this book deals with the sinister story of what might have happened to these people. And of course, this being Beigbeder, he also deals... One of the disadvantages of preoccupying yourself seriously with writing is that the techniques start to shine through the art of the text, and you are constantly taken out of the fictional world the writer is trying to embed you in. I once heard a typographer complain that he could never watch period dramas because they always got the fonts wrong. I guess it's a little like that. Reading Murakami recently, arguably my favourite author once upon a time, I had a feeling of being cheated. I felt... A bit annoying in the beggining because of all the Anti-american talk, but after you pass that part, I found something incredible. A realistic technique of writing brought me tears. They call it fiction novel, but it's full of reality. They could've been saved and no one reacted. They were left to die in horrible torture and this most certainly is not fiction anymore. Everything is amazingly illustrated in words. If you want the book to have a bigger impact, i also suggest watching some... It came back to me recently that I had read this book at some point in the last. hmmm, I'm going to say 5-6 years; and it appears I never added or reviewed it here. I just read a bunch of others' reviews, and am reminded how the book slips back and forth between a modern-day examination of America by a Frenchman, and a fictionalized story of a father and his two sons who are visiting New York and having breakfast at the Windows on the World restaurant at the top of the North Tower when the... Definitely a YES! I remember reading Beigbeder when I was a teen & when new dandyism was the actual trend in Paris… I was cut between hating his view on life -cynical, alcoholic, boho- and it's incredible quality on writing. But now, ten years later, it's a revelation: what kind of delicious character is that Beigbeder! He makes me think of Rousseau in the Confessions "total narcissism hidden on a sort of self indulgence, unbearable but so attractive. I don't know if it was that book (the... I read this book three years ago and all I remember is the description of a couple having sex while the building starts to collapse. Unnecessary provocation IMHO. Apparently this is the way a French person deals with trauma. Oh I'm sorry is it a stereotype? Well, kinda well deserved! Loved it. Beautiful and honest view of life. Amazing book. The best line: kids just want to eat, adults just want to fuck (but in spanish) Windows on the World Windows on the Plane. Windows on the Crash. Windows on the Smoke. BROKEN WINDOWS Read it in the original French a few years back in school. Hated it and loved it and back and forth as it went along. French author Frederic Beigbeder's novel "Windows on the World" has certainly garnered quite a wide range of reviews as posted on AmazonUSA. I came to this novel relatively late; six years after its initial publication in French and subsequent translation to English for sale in the US and the UK. I have never been able to read a work of fiction about the attacks of September 11th, 2001. I start them - and most are very good - but can never seem to stick with the book after the first chapter or... This book was so eye opening for me. I know a lot about 9/11 Ive seen so many documentaries on it, and yet I still learnt more throughout this book. The story goes into horrifying detail about what it would be like to be trapped in the tower, through the heat, the smells, the panic; it all felt so real. The words and phrases he uses to describe it really did make me feel like I had a sense of what it would be like to be trapped there. If you have been through a similar experience like this or... This is quite possibly the most arrogant, pompous book I've ever read. How you can possibly make a book about the 9/11 attacks about you I have no idea but this book managed it and good god I did not enjoy it. There were parts that peaked my interest but they were overshadowed by the main character (who seems very much like the author himself) who I wanted to punch at almost ALL times. SPOILERS* Also, the author somehow manages to put a chapter about him masturbating JUST before one of the... I'm not sure what to do with this book. It's an uncomfortable read, but totally necessary. Not so much for the fictional story that unfolds inside- the unlucky people trapped in the North Tower of the World Trade Center are basically stock characters: the self-absorbed, hedonistic divorced dad (of course he's a Texan. who is a shitty father to his two spoiled little hellions; the awful high-powered stock brokers carrying on an extra-marital affair. I never really bought any of them as... While this book was pretty interesting, it wasn't as good as I'd hoped it'd be. It's my first read by Beigbeder, and I am a little dissapointed. What bothered me most was that Beigbeder felt the need to have two POVs in this book: one of an American, divorced fathern, Carhtex Yorston, who took his children up the Twin Towers at the moment of the attack, and then his own, one year later, in a restaurant in Paris. He must've felt like his own voice was a necessary addition to his book - it wasn't... "I do not know why I decided to write this book. Maybe because I saw no interest in writing about anything else. What else to write about? The only interesting subjects are the ones that are taboo. We have to write what is forbidden. Brutal, easy, hyperreal, and officially one of the best things I've read so far. I could go on about how great this novel is but, first of all, it's 9/11 and second, I guess that much can be deduced by the opening line. You know how it ends: everybody dies. If... I read several reviews comparing this book to Ian McEwan's Saturday and Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. All address September 11 or its aftermath in some way. I planned to read all three. I got through Windows and Saturday, but could not get past chapter one of Extremely Loud. This book was published in France well over a year before the translation was available in the U. S. It caused quite an uproar, undeservedly in my opinion. What I find most interesting about... This was: a very good (but imperfect) book. It does some cool things with form- one chapter for every minute from when the plane hit the first tower to when it collapsed. It has a compelling critique of capitalism and US Imperialism that suddenly goes soft at the end - but perhaps thats partly excused because of when it was published (relatively soon after the attacks) The ending is bad and kind of hokey. Still, I highly recommend it. I'm still not quite sure what I think about this book. The chapters run minute by minute, and alternate between the thoughts of the gentleman who is trapped in the north tower with his young boys, and the thoughts of the Author. I found this a bit distracting. That being said, this book managed to both break my heart, and make me chuckle. Not an easy feat considering the subject matter! I'm glad I read this, it's very different. The idea I liked and found in this book: the break in the life of generation. Generation of 50-a, 60-s, 80-s, 90-s. All of them have their own story. It form their personality, it makes them to be different. What is the break of 2000 generation? Does the collapse of American world contributed to the change of our picture of the world. I amnt sure. less offended by the subject matter (recreating last hour of 9/11 atop WTC) or even the jokey tone - than the piss-poor quality of the prose itself this is a really shitty book, irrespective of its 'transgressive' nature more evidence that the degeneration of the Arts is pandemic (Windows won the Prix Interallie) This book is an unique addition to the dozens of things written on 9/11. It is different- I like it. It is written from two very different people who live countries apart and I think this is what makes it stand apart from other things I've read. It is interesting that the author puts in his own opinions here and there. Sometimes it's a bit unnecessary and a bit a whole, though, nice! One must be shameless to write such a book. Beigbeder is and I respect (admire. that. The novel is both a tribute to 9/11 victims and an European tribute to American pop culture. Great references to linger, Hemingway, B. and many more, including also musicians and directors. The generation of '2001' truly is a beautiful catastrophe. Have you imagined what it would be like if you were on the top of the World Trace Center during the 9/11 Attacks? Neither had I. This book will take you there. I had never read anything like it and I absolutely loved this book, as devastating as it may be! Fell in love with this book, I found that the author did a great job of getting into the characters' heads and portrayed the events quite realistically as if we(the readers)were there witnessing the horrors with our own eyes and smelling our own flesh burning. I'm like. depressed that I even read 100 pages of this book. Terrible, flat, uninteresting.

Triste es la historia de un pueblo, cuando es su propio gobierno el que atenta contra él, aplicando el terrorismo para justificar guerras injustas, que engaña y se burla del dolor que provoca en su propia gente. I guess being near the World Trade Center is a curse. { dots" true. arrows" true. effect" slide" Barry Cafe Techne Architects had a definite theme in mind for this project when they briefed WOW Architectural for steel windows and doors. They wanted flexibility to operate within all seasons of Melbourne weather, to maximise internal natural light, and at the same time, they must maintain the Victorian heritage values of the building. All this on a tight budget. WOW utilised a range of window types to address these challenges, including a combination of operable sash movements, louvers and fixed glazing. We integrated fixed bench seating into the shopfront glazing in order to promote street activation and to capitalise on the operable facade during warmer seasons. It features a side lane facade of Green Tea coloured steel louvers and a counterweighted steel window frame that lifts up and engages the new cafe with the streetscape. Learn More { dots" true. arrows" true. effect" slide" 301 Elizabeth St WOW Architectural worked with designer Insu Kim to produce a raw, antiquated natural looking steel shop front for a new Korean Restaurant in the hub of the Melbourne CBD. The client of 301 Elizabeth St wanted a minimalist frame and we treated the steel with a blackening process, then burnished it with wax to give it a lovely natural feel. St. Ali North Cafe Construction of the St. Ali North cafe in Melbourne was a complex process – one that required the combination of expedited building phases and a varied set of steel window and door modules. WOW Architectural worked closely with the builder to allow construction to move ahead of the traditional sequence by installing a set of steel sub-frames on site that ensured the millimetre-accuracy required for installing steel doors was met. With this process, the wide variety of units including fixed lites, bi-folding, casement and awning windows and a set of highly articulated doors were fabricated to Windows on the World exacting standards. Prahran Hotel The newly transformed Prahran Hotel in Melbournes inner urban stretch is the latest example of a commercial venue that has embraced the unique design aesthetic of steel windows and doors. The builders and architects involved in the project say they had an imperative to tie in the modern renovations with the classic 1940s façade and working class history of the public bar. Steel windows and doors delivered on the brief across three floors. The works for the Prahran Hotel required a wide range of door and window units. The clients budget meant that these units were to be constructed from composite standard steel profiles for a very cost-effective solution. The schedule included multi-panel sliding doors, a single 4500mm long counter-weighted servery window, standard fixed lites and round porthole windows. Of particular note are the unusual 2240mm diameter circular windows fitted to the large concrete culverts on the buildings façade which achieve their remarkable effect very simply with a rolled 50 X 50 mm steel angle constructions and 30mm ‘t-bar transoms and mullions. Baby Pizza Restaurant The door and window units WOW Architectural was commissioned to build for Baby Pizza were required to live up to the wear and tear of a frenetic city restaurant, while maintaining an air of sophistication in a very stylish precinct of inner Melbourne. The standard steel sections are welded into a composite structure to cost-effectively eliminate water-ingress and unwanted drafts. By utilising custom folded steel panels inserted into the base of each unit, bullet hinges on the awning windows and powder-coated peg stays, the units allow for cross ventilation while imparting a sense of solid sophistication. The double powder-coat finish in a subtle grey ensures that the frames at Baby Pizza will retain their robust function for years to come. This was another highly successful collaboration with design firm Projects of Imagination. Residence – Elsternwick The design firm for this residential renovation in the Melbourne inner suburb of Elsternwick was 'Black Milk. The brief required a narrowline front profile with the ability to hold a double glazed unit. WOW Architectural achieved this using a 50x10 mm solid steel door profile - all on edge. The bespoke design included one very large sliding door, with the track set up into the ceiling cavity, which was very small. This project came up a treat with a very happy client who is now able to open their large living/kitchen area onto the backyard outdoor area and enjoy an al fresco lifestyle in a truly beautiful setting. Definitely not. ´´Man Made Climate Change. Men and it´s formidably huge infinite ego. puny men with delusions of ' God' they still thinking that we are all alone in this universe? That there are no Galaxies, no Stars, NO SUN, no Milky Way?Do they still think that none of the above mentioned cosmological entities (just to name a few) have nothing to say about how things happend here on Earth? Well, if they still think that way, then why are they called Scientists? They are not, if they still have that retarded way of thinking. As above, so below, and everything in the entire Universe is interconnected. Eyes open. Be safe everyone.

The first step of thieving even more property will probably be to make owners 'keepers' of the property they paid for, as they did at the DVLA for vehicles. Then the unlawful, private The Crown fuzz and unlawful now privatised courts and councils could simply thieve without any crime being committed to 'justify' thieving it. Windows in some other language is ramen lol. Holy crap. The UK has these morons as well.

Rest In Peace to an amazing soul. 🇦🇱

After the attack, I was forced to have to go back into the city just blocks away from ground zero. The smell was unreal. The air was thick with pain and sorrow. human body is amazing the and will to press on was also in the air. You also feel like one of the lucky ones to have survived. You do ask yourself why did I survive and they did not but that feeling is fleeting as well.

I've only stumbled upon this video, a few minutes ago, and really wish I had found it matter. I was one of an estimated 10,000 strong crowd, who joined together in Liverpool, earlier this evening (Monday 1st August 2016) to hear Jeremy Corbyn speak.I have always voted Labour, but at the age of 50, I have joined The Labour Party, purely because of the inspiration of Mr Jeremy Corbyn. This was my first political rally, but I very much doubt it will be my last. Finally, there is someone who thinks as we do! Finally, there is someone honest, decent, reliable and down to earth, who says it like it is. And the vast majority of Liverpool, it seems, is right behind him! Thank you to Mr Piers Corbyn, for his insight into these matters - and you may be heartened to learn, that, at tonight's rally, the name of Tony Blair was met by the sound of 10,000 scousers booing in unison! Here's to the long-awaited revolution in modern British politics. Here's to Jeremy Corbyn.

I live in the aren't great here, but my GOD! they DOING to you guys? This is HORRIBLE! I always wondered why the British would leave all they know to live here, as I've always wanted to live in England. I don't always agree with you Mark, and being a socialist at heart, I'm never going to. However, I can see where you are going with this and broadly speaking I agree. Plus I haven't been involved with ANY protest movement that hasn't been co-opted in some way or other. BUT, but, but. whilst there may not be genuine climate change, there is a problem with pollution. We do need to find greener ways to live. The trouble with that is, that when individuals actually DO IT, the councils always get in the way. People who build hobbit houses with composting toilets and so on, always seem to be hassled. As usual, they want everyone to do it their way, the state's way. We also need to get beyond left and right and blaming everything on Marxism. Those at the top aren't Marxists or anything else in particular, just exploiters.

I hope you do go after that local labour party. Someone needs to give these Fabian agents a serious kickass. Are they all dead. MauriatOttolink. Here's a quote from The Club of Rome (think tank) from 'The First Global Revolution' 1991) “In searching for the new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. And a PDF for free download. Things like this inspire my philosophy of not regretting any of my decisions, even the stupid ones. *Every* decision we make has consequences. No matter how small and mundane, every circumstance of our lives is, in ways big or small, predicated upon everything that came before. And, we can look back and say "gee I wish I would done [x] that one time" because you would've won a bet or would've gotten a better deal on a car or something, whatever. That's all speculative; you can say with confidence that one or two consequences of a decision would have been different, but you have zero idea what else would have changed, because changing that one thing affects every single thing that comes after. Maybe winning that bet or getting that good deal would've ruined your life (watch Run Lola Run for a great illustration of this. Your life is composed of millions and millions of decision points, with each of them leading to a path unique from what another choice would have caused. You change one thing way back when, and it's nothing but guess work from that point on. Of the hundred of billions of permutations of how your life *might* have gone, you know for certain how exactly one of those permutations played out. this one. I have a great job, a great wife, and a beautiful little daughter. My family is financially secure, we have a great home and great friends, and we're doing very well and are very happy. If I would have brushed my teeth for 30 seconds longer or ridden my bike just a little slower one day back in 2001, I wouldn't have run into the girl who became my wife. I'd be who knows where doing who knows what. but, I stopped brushing my teeth when I did, and I rode my bike the way I did, and I ran into that girl, and we went out for Vietnamese food a little bit later, and the rest is history. This guy is alive today because he decided to change his shirt. You don't know which decisions end up being the big ones. They all matter. So, when someone asks me what I'd do differently if I could have something back to do over, I say I wouldn't change a damned thing.
